UPDATE: Police ID Man, 83, Who Died After Being Struck By Car While Crossing Street
An 83-year-old man who was hit by a car died on the way to the hospital shortly before 6 a.m. Monday, police said.
Angelica Gonzalez, 68, woman was driving north on Alabama Street when investigators said she hit 83-year-old Alfonso Morales, who was crossing the street in front of a church.
Police said the Gonzelez, of the 2700 block of Federal Street, then lost control of her car and slammed into the wall after hitting the man. It is unknown if the woman was hurt.
Morales was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Speed and alcohol are not factors in the collision. An investigation will continue.
Morales becomes the 70th traffic related death for 2011, compared with 61 at the same time in 2010. It is also the 17th pedestrian death for 2011, compared with 18 at th same time in 2010. The city had a total of 62 traffic related deaths in all of 2010.
