Haggerty Reacts To Appearance Of His Initials In Federal Corruption Indictment

Dan Haggerty, county commissioner for El Paso’s precinct 4, opened up to ABC-7 about the appearance of his initials in a recently unsealed federal indictment against former County Judge Anthony Cobos.

“I’m going to try to stay as confident as I can that everything will turn out fine,” said Haggarty on Monday.

Haggerty has not been arrested or charged with any crime. However, he appears in the public corruption indictment against Cobos.

Cobos is accused of taking bribes and striking deals to rig a county contract with a financial advisor in 2007. The indictment has Haggerty’s initials in certain pages, alleging Haggerty took more than $10,000 in benefits from that financial adviser, then arranged a meeting with Cobos and the company. The documents also claim Haggerty and Cobos voted to award that company with the county contract.

“I just apologize to the public. I know it just looks horrible but hopefully we’ll get to it,” said Haggerty. He said he couldn’t comment on details of that deal on his attorney’s advice now.

“I’ll explain all that when (my attorney) says I can go ahead and do that but right now let’s just … I don’t want them to come and arrest me before I get on the plane unless they want to do chemo on me,” said Haggerty.

The chemo comment stems from a recent kidney cancer diagnosis. Haggerty is going out of town this week to get treatment.

“The timing is just horrible with what I’m facing and now this…” said Haggerty.

Haggerty denies any wrongdoing and said he was surprised by some of the content in the indictment. “I thought I’ve cooperated and worked with the FBI since the beginning,” he said. “But I don’t want to be too critical. They have a job to do and I understand that.”
