Candidate Drops Out Of District 75 Race

Texas is one step closer to the twice-delayed May 29th Texas primary elections.

A statewide redistricting battle shook up the race for District 75 in El Paso.

This month, court-ordered maps were set in place.

Now, one candidate is no longer running for the seat.

Art Fierro, chairman of El Paso Community College’s Board of Trustees, removed his name from the ballot Friday morning.

After the new maps were set, Fierro was kicked out of District 75, meaning he had to move to the new district if he wanted to remain on the ballot.

Fierro said that, after much deliberating, he decided a move to a new home was not in his family’s best interest.

“I felt like I owed it to the constituents, even to the other candidates, that if I wasn’t going to move I had to be off the ballot,” said Fierro.

Fierro wasn’t the only one with a big decision to make.

Joe Moody, a candidate for state representative, District 78, was also kicked out of his district with the new maps.

According to officials at the El Paso Democrats headquarters, Moody filed the appropriate paperwork Thursday to show he is moving to a new address.

The move allows him to continue is run for the District 78 seat.

With Fierro no longer in the running for District 75, three candidates are left vying for the spot being vacated by Chente Quintanilla.

Tony San Roman threw his name into the hat Friday.

He’s a former El Paso Community College board member.

Another candidate is Hector Enriquez, a former Socorro School Board trustee and business development executive.

Mary E. Gonzalez, the national president of a latina-based service sorority, is also running for the seat.

The Texas primary will be held on May 29.
