Teen Who Allegedly ‘Faked’ Cancer Arrested

There was money raised, a charity formed, and even a special prom put on, for teenager, Angie Gomez, because said she was too sick with leukemia to attend hers, investigators have debunked that claim and now, Gomez is behind bars.

19-year-old Gomez had little to say as Horizon Police booked her on a charge of “theft of property”, a stark contrast from the chipper girl who gushed to camera crews just one year ago.

“They’ve done so much they’re just genuinely caring people. That’s what i love the most. No one forced them to do what they did. They did this from the kindness of their heart,” said Gomez referring to the community’s outpouring of support during an ABC7 interview from 2011.

But perhaps their hearts were misguided when in June of 2011 Gomez was portrayed as a fraud.

Police say she faked having leukemia, causing students to put on a prom.

Students also helped her raise roughly $17,000 for a charity she founded called “achieve the dream.”

“Let’s just wait until the dust settles,” said Gomez’s attorney, Sheldon Myers.

While Myers remained tight-lipped, he did shed a little light on her case, saying Gomez didn’t have cancer, but was sick as a child, and encountered children with leukemia during her hospital stays.

“(Gomez) has a real soft spot for those people that suffer from those diseases, and that’s why she was trying to get money for them,” said Myers.

Gomez’s bond as set at $50,000.

Myers said Gomez never spent the money, and had good intentions for it, but declined to comment any further on the case.
