Florida commissioner says taxpayers should partially own any team playing in arena county helps fund

If Orange County taxpayers chip in $20 million for a new downtown stadium to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Orlando, then taxpayers should become part owners of any new team, Commissioner Pete Clarke says in an article by the Orlando Sentinel.

Clarke said he made the proposal after seeing the public help pay for two arenas for the Orlando Magic basketball team since 1989 without getting a slice of the profits and growth in the team’s value.
