Man suspected of child abuse found dead after police standoff

A man wanted on child abuse charges was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with authorities, police said.

Officers were serving a warrant early Wednesday at the San Marco Apartments in El Paso’s Lower Valley. But the man inside — wanted for alleged continuous sexual abuse of a child — did not open the door.

Instead, officers heard a single gunshot coming from inside the apartment, prompting them to back off and call the SWAT team.

Police also evacuated the apartments complex. Neighbors were forced out of their homes at 4 a.m.

“I think under the circumstances it’s OK, as far as safety, I believe.” said Jesse Dore, a neighbor. “Other than that, I can’t complain. We’re OK, so that’s what matters.”

Police have not identified the man.
