6-year-old dodges bullet while traveling U.S.-Mexico border with her mother

A 6-year-old girl dodged a bullet while traveling near the U.S.-Mexico border with her mother, according to New Mexico State Police.

A state police officer tells ABC-7 29-year-old Diana Hernandez and her daughter, 6-year-old Montana Willis, were driving north on Pete Domenici Highway, which leads into Juarez, Mexico on Sunday afternoon. The officer says Willis was asleep in the backseat when a bullet, believed to be from a .40-caliber handgun, pierced through the back window on the passenger side of the car. The bullet missed Willis and was found lodged in the body of the black Mitsubishi Lancer with New Mexico plates.

According to the officer, the bullet came at the car from the west, but it’s not clear whether or not the bullet came from the Mexican side of the border.

ABC-7 crews report the incident shut down Pete Domenici Highway at Airport Road for hours while New Mexico State Police and Customs and Border Protection agents investigated the scene.

The highway was reopened around 5 p.m..
