El Paso Athletes Hold Their Own In Austin At UIL Texas State Track & Field Championships: A Handful Of El Paso-Area Youngsters Win Medals On Day 1

A number of El Paso-area youngsters held their own at the UIL Texas State Track and Field meet –especially, in the 4A Boys 800 meter. Two out of the three medalists are from El Paso county. San Elizario’s Michael Collazo Johnson, the #1 seed, came in second and Jefferson’s Gerardo Escapita placed third: Silver and Gold Medals!
Hanks High school’s Heather Sheetz won a bronze medal in the 4A Girls Discus, and she placed 6th in the shot put.
Burges High School represented El Paso strong. The 4X100 team set a school and El Paso record with a time of 40.87. However, that mark only got the Burges runners 4th place against some stiff competition in the state of Texas. Texarkana High won the gold medal. Burges’ Keandre Bates medaled in the triple jump, taking home a silver.
One of the biggest disappointments of the day was in the 4A boys discus, where a favorite, Parkland High’s Annthony Dudley, failed to medal. Unfortunately, he finished in 9th place, after not being able to get a throw off. On the UIL web site, it has him listed in 9th place because of a “foul”.
