Two deputies injured in vehicle collision overnight

Two sheriff’s deputies were sent to local hospitals following a collision at the intersection of Pebble Hills and Joe Battle/South.

According to officials, at around 3:00 a.m. a Ford Mustang was traveling southbound on Joe battle when it ran a red light.

The vehicle then struck the side of a sheriff’s patrol unit, which was driving west on Pebble Hills, a release said.

The vehicles each came to a rest in eastbound lanes of traffic.

A male believed to be the driver of the Mustang was detained by deputies, after he reportedly fled on foot, according to the release.

The man detained, 23-year-old Samuel David Garcia, was arrested for driving while intoxicated, deputies said. The sheriff’s office has charged Garcia with one count of intoxication assault that causes serious boily injury to SBI, a peace officer, firefighter, or EMS, and 3 counts of accident involving SBI or death.

A 22-year-old passenger from the Mustang was sent to an area hospital with an injury to his wrist. Garcia was also transported.

One of the deputies, the driver of the unit, had a head laceration. The other deputy, a passenger, had broken ribs and fractures, officials said.

All the injuries were non life-threatening.

According to officials, the deputies were working off-duty as security.
