A spokesman said witnesses near in the Newman park area in central El Paso called at around 3 p.m. to report a suspicious man who was seen reaching into the window of a black SUV and even tried to climb the fence of a nearby home.

By the time emergency crews got there, they found the 35-year-old man one block away, near Alabama at Louisville. He had collapsed on the side of the road.

Initially, it was unclear if he had been hit by a vehicle or whether he had a medical condition. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators say the driver of the black SUV returned to the scene and indicated “there are no outstanding vehicles or persons in the case,” meaning the driver may not be a suspect at this time.

Investigators will have to wait for autopsy and toxicology reports to find out what caused the man’s death, police said.
