Sun City Scifi On the Grid Saturday to help out family in need, bring sci-fi community together
The grid can be dangerous in the “Tron” film franchise. It can maim or even kill.
Luckily, the Sun City Scifi: On the Grid is all about friendliness and helping out a family in need.
Sun City Scif’s: On the Grid weekend kicked off from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. this past Friday at Asylum Comics & Cards, 5360 N. Mesa, where “Tron” and “Caddyshack” actress Cindy Morgan will be signing autographs for $20 and photos ops for $10.
On Saturday, March 30, the Grid moves to Fiesta Lanes, 5850 Onix Dr., from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission to the vendor room is $3 and bowling is $10 for three hours and the shoe rental. The vendor room will have Morgan signing autographs, local artists and vendors, as well as a costume contest at 6 p.m. Bowling sessions will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“We will be donating bowl-a-thon profits to the Espinoza-Zamora family who are current victims of fraud,” said Grid and Sun City Scifi organizer Ean Puhlman. “We want to do something different that involves the sci-fi/comic book community instead of having a three to four day marathon of launch parties, after parties, etc. We feel that kind-of formula can wear out a person quickly. This event is more intimate. Sci-fi fans can have
quality time to spend with the other sci-fi fans, as well as actors and actresses from sci-fi movies and television shows.”
On the Grid is a prelude to Sun City Scifi’s inaugural convention April 27-28 at the El Paso Marriott which will include Star Wars’ Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) among several other guests.
“We are planning a lot of cool activities that the attendees should enjoy very much. We have recently added a game room that will be run by Daxie Boy Toys, where attendees can enter Pokmon, Naruto and HeroClix tournaments. Also in the game room, Larry Nemecek aka Dr. Star Trek will be running Star Trek trivia and blooper caption games,” Puhlman said of the April convention. “As of right now we have sold over half of the booths in the vendor room and all but a few tables in artist alley. So far we have sold some pre-sale tickets, however we expect sales to pick up once the event nears and when we get more advertising. We are excited to be having the celebrity charity dinner on Saturday April 27th to benefit the Wounded Warrior project. Half of our celebrity guests have already confirmed they will attend the charity dinner.”
