Some welcomed snowy conditions others concerned about icy roads
Some El Pasoans ABC-7 spoke with Thursday say they welcomed the snow.
but for those who had to hit the road in the morning it was a different story
Snow blanketed the mountains making for a beautiful view.
Many playing with snow for a change.
“I enjoy this weather a lot,” said one woman.
A father walking with his daughter in the snow tells ABC-7,”it’s awesome it’s a change of pace.”
While El Pasoans enjoyed the snow the Office of Emergency Management was keeping on eye on the roads and highways.
“Right about 7:30 weather did roll in,” said Rafael Reyes, Emergency Management Coordinator for El Paso.
And alerting city officials.. none other than Sun Metro bus drivers.
They alerted the city about icy roads around town.
That’s how the city learned about the ice causing a traffic mess at Mesa and Mesa Hills Street in West El Paso.
Police closed the street so that road crews could dump dirt to eliminate the slippery conditions.
The city also closed Transmountain Road on the West side and Fred Wilson Street in the Northeast.
Throughout the day the snow has melted and the attention turns to puddles of water that could freeze overnight turning into black ice.
Ice on the road could be to blame for a rollover near Anthony.
Thursday afternoon, the city shut down a stretch of the Paisano Street bridge because of a downed telephone line. Road crews took advantage of the closure to salt the bridge.
Ted Marcus, with the department of transportation reminded everyone of some simple advice for drivers.
“We recommend that if you don’t have to go out don’t go out. Delay a trip to the store until the next day. We expect better weather tomorrow so if you can wait delay it,” said Marcus.
City officials tell ABC-7 the road crews will be back maintaining roads Friday starting at 3 a.m.
