Sheriff’s office investigates ‘Super Bowl squares’ being sold by County employee
Betting pools – including selling squares for Super Bowl games – are common.
They also happen to be illegal.
With Super Bowl squares you win if your square matches the score.
Buying squares is a Class C Misdemeanor.
El Paso Sheriff Richard Wiles said finding those who buy squares is a low priority for his office.
Wiles said the County employee was allegedly selling squares for $300 a piece.
But it’s what else that person did that could have that person facing charges.
“What happened was that we believe the individual who is a suspect in that case was taking a cut off that money before it was paid out,” Wiles said. “That’s a much worse offense. It is a promotion of gambling and that is a Class A Misdemeanor.”
Deputies presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office.
No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.
