Suspect in Las Cruces Shooting in Custody, Believed to Have Been Hiding in Juarez

Police say the 17-year-old suspected of shooting and critically injuring his Las Cruces neighbor January 15 is now in custody after he was detained at an area port of entry.

Investigators charged Gustavo Angel Alvarado with one count of attempted murder. Alvarado will initially be held without bond.

The shooting victim, Pete Limon, 34, remains in critical but stable condition at University Medical Center of El Paso. Police say Alvarado shot Limon in the stomach with a shotgun after they got into a fight.

It happened at a mobile home park on the 300 block of Karen Avenue.

Alvarado ran away after the shooting and investigators believe he was hiding with relatives in Juarez, Mexico. The suspect’s relatives convinced him to turn himself in to authorities, according to police.
