Road Trip to Fredericksburg

KVIA took a road trip to Fredericksburg. The 500-mile seven-hour drive to a city in the Texas hill countryis a trip straight into the heart of Texas-German cultural heritage. We visited a variety of museums, shops and restaurants. Chef Glenn Jung from Rathskeller’s restaurant says, “Many of the recipes that we use in the restaurant were given to me from a cookbook from my grandmother that was passed onto her by her grandmother.” A local musician, Justin Dodds, played in Rathskeller’s. It was early and the tables were just beginning to fill up. Dodds says he grew up in Fredericksburg, “I remember many of my friends’ grandparents speaking German at home.” He also recalled how he had a shift in attitude after attending Saint Edwards University in Austin and then later working in Dallas. After he returned to his hometown, he said, “I didn’t realize how much I had taken it for granted.”
