Border Patrol Agents Kill Man Who Allegedly Failed to Stop at Checkpoint
A pistol-shaped pellet gun was recovered from the vehicle of a man shot and killed by border patrol agents east of Sierra Blanca, according to Bill Brooks with Customs and Border Protection.
Brooks told ABC-7 the shooting happened Thursday at about 4:45 p.m. The driver, yet to be identified by CBP, pulled into the Border Patrol checkpoint, but allegedly failed to stop for inspection.
Border patrol agents followed the vehicle 30 miles beyond the checkpoint. The driver stopped and four agents approached the vehicle.
According to Brooks, an agent yelled “gun” and two other agents fired their weapons, striking the man.
State troopers and deputies with the Hudspeth and Culberson counties sheriff’s offices responded to the scene.
A justice of the peace called to the scene “determined the individual was deceased,” according to Brooks, who would not say if the man pointed the pellet gun at an agent.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, CBP’s Office of Internal Affairs and the FBI are investigating.
