Las Cruces: 1 man dead another in critical condition after shooting

Las Cruces police responding to a shots-fired call Saturday afternoon found a bloody scene.

“10 minutes before 2 p.m. we were dispatched to a shots fired call,” Sgt. Roberto Gutierrez said.

“One subject was pronounced dead and the other was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso.”

Resident Joan Gallegos tells ABC-7 this is something that hasn’t happened in the neighborhood before.

“It’s a pretty nice neighborhood. Everybody knows everybody. Everybody is friendly here,” said Gallegos.

But the peaceful Valentine’s Day afternoon turned into something that looked like a crime scene out of a movie.

“It’s shocking, it.s surprising,” Gallegos said.

As detectives scoured the scene for clues in a home and truck behind the police tape Ernestine Medina tells ABC-7 how she was startled by the commotion.

“All of a sudden the shots,” said Medina. Her daughter was getting ready to head to work.

“She saw the truck coming and the guys getting out and going down the arroyo and she told us to get in and for me to call 911,” said Medina.

And while investigators picked up a victim’s blood-stained shirt as evidence,
a manhunt continued.

“We are looking for a black in color Jetta. Two suspects are in it. That’s all we have is a light-skinned, medium-build subject,” Gutierrez said.

A spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department tells ABC-7 the surviving victim is in critical condition.
