Man in CBP custody dies at El Paso hospital

Customs and Border Protection officials said a man who was in custody at the Highway 62/180 Border Patrol checkpoint near Hueco Tanks died Friday.

In a statement, a CBP spokesman said the man, who was 36-year-old, was found unresponsive in a holding cell shortly before 11:00 a.m. Friday.

The man was transported to an El Paso hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

CBP officials say the man was in custody because agents had discovered controlled substances in his possession. No other details about the man’s identity were released.

The Border Patrol’s El Paso Sector and CBP’s Office of Internal Affairs are now working together on the investigation.
