El Paso Inc.: City shelves Northeast waterpark plan

The city has dropped plans for a 40-acre waterpark and year-round indoor aquatic adventure park next to Cohen Stadium in Northeast El Paso that has been under discussion since 2012.

Two companies that had been working with the city and have worked together on other projects in Texas – Hawaiian Falls and Fieldhouse USA – responded to the request for proposals, or RFP, that the city issued last July.

But months have passed, and the staff recommendation that Northeast city Rep. Carl Robinson and others were awaiting never came.

Jessica Herrera, the city’s redevelopment manager, responded to El Paso Inc.’s inquiry about the project.

“What happened was the proposals expired,” Herrera said. “The evaluation committee vetted the proposals and we felt it was not in the best interest at this time to move forward with either proposal.”
