Dona Ana county employees arrested

Several Dona Ana county employees are arrested for their involvement in an alleged check cashing scheme. The alleged ringleader, Maria Ceniceros worked as a document technician at the County Clerk’s Office.

Investigators said she, her husband, daughter, three co workers and another man were all involved.

ABC-7 cameras were rolling as authorities entered and searched the clerk’s office. Shortly after, they arrested three employees and escorted them to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. The group was allegedly collected and cashed fraudulent tax return checks in exchange for kickbacks.

The Sheriff’s Office was tipped off in May and an investigation followed. An employee who running for County Clerk tells ABC-7 this has tainted the reputation of the county.

Robert Hernandez, A resident of Dona Ana County, said, “The integrity of the clerk’s office is now gone. How can we go back and trust the clerk’s office with so many people involved.” Hernandez said.

County clerk Lyn Ellins said he is not involved in the criminal activity. Officials could not confirm how long this has been going on, it’s still under investigation.
