Police release name of man who allegedly shot security officer in NM then killed himself in West El Paso
New Mexico State Police have released the name of the man who shot a security guard and then killed himself on June 2.
Police say that 62-year-old Benjamin Martinez, of Canutillo, went into the Human Services Department building on Crossett Lane in Anthony, New Mexico.
After entering the building, Martinez allegedly shot an on-duty security officer and immediately left the building.
New Mexico State Police issued a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) announcement for the suspect and his
vehicle to surrounding law enforcement agencies and Texas law enforcement agencies. The security officer was identified as 41-year-old Javier Hernandez of La Union, New Mexico.
Shortly after the BOLO, El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies saw Martinez driving on South Desert Boulevard in West El Paso.
Deputies pulled over his car and when deputies approached the car they discovered he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene and no law enforcement personnel fired any weapons.
Hernandez remains in critical condition.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating this incident in conjunction with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. Further details of this incident will be released as more information is obtained.
