Malfunction has Chihuahuas fans dodging fireworks

Some Chihuahuas fans found themselves dodging under tables and running for safety during a fireworks display after Thursday night’s game.

Officials from the Pacific Coast Leauge team confirmed there was a malfunction and one guest required attention.

ABC-7 spoke with a young girl who was at the game and witnessed the incident.

The Chihuahuas game began like any other, with many filing into the stands this holiday weekend to see some fireworks fly high. But a fireworks malfunction recorded by Julie Bernard shows a big white flash, then a hissing followed by fireworks flying towards the crowd.

“Our heart was pounding because we were really scared,” said 13-year-old Deziree Dominguez who was at the game.

It was Deziree’s second time at the stadium. She told ABC-7 she was looking forward to the fireworks.

“I was really excited. I started recording the fireworks right away,” Deziree said.

She told ABC-7 it all took a turn when the fireworks stopped shooting into the sky.

“They just went sideways instead of up. It looked pretty cool but when people started shouting it scared me,” Dominguez told ABC-7.

The El Paso Chihuahuas sent ABC-7 this statement:

“Thankfully, only one guest required minor attention and left with their family.

Deziree says park employees were quick to assist the fans afterward.

“The staff, they were all running. They were going in different directions,” the teen said.

Although Deziree loves fireworks displays and tells ABC-7 she will go back,
she wants the stadium personnel to be more cautious so it won’t happen again.

“I hope that they make sure the fireworks are going to go up where they are supposed too so everybody’s safe and nothing happens to people,” she said.

The Chihuahuas went on with a fireworks display Friday night. Everything ran smoothly.
