New Mexico State Police investigate officer-involved shooting

An 18-year old man is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting in Sunland Park.

It happened on the 800 block of Cedar Park Avenue in Sunland Park just west of Artcraft Road.

Sunland Park Police received a call about Cervantes holding his family hostage, threatening them with a knife at the home Sunday night.

When officers arrived, they found Cervantes holding a woman and a young child hostage inside a car in the driveway of the home.

Police say Cervantes failed to listen to officers and instead tried to run from the car. That’s when police say officers shot Cervantes.

He was taken to UMC and is in critical condition.

The neighborhood is a fairly new subdivision and many families have only been living there for only a couple of months or so. One neighbor says it’s a safe are but hearing about a shooting is alarming.

“Kind of frightening. We were awake last night at 11:30 but we didn’t hear anything and it does alarm me because we do have a small one with us so we definitely do have to be careful,” Ruth Moreno said.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
