Video shows car driving off with deputy inside

The Doa County Sheriff’s Office released video of a wanted man who allegedly sped off with a deputy inside his car following a traffic stop last month in Chaparral.

Deputy Abel Rodriguez made the traffic stop about 10:40 p.m. Feb. 20 at the intersection of McCombs and Red Sun. The driver, 26-year-old Roberto Garcia, had an active warrant in Otero County.

When Rodriguez asked Garcia to get out of his car, Garcia allegedly refused. The video shows Rodriguez attempting to pull the driver from the car before driver speeds off with the deputy inside the car. The incident was captured on Deputy Rodriguez’s dash-cam.

The sheriff’s office said Rodriguez ordered Garcia to stop before reportedly hitting him over the head with his flashlight. Garcia eventually stopped the vehicle about 500 feet from the original stop.

Garcia was charged with speeding, failure to provide a valid driver’s license, resisting or obstructing and possession of paraphernalia. He was booked into the Doa Ana County Detention Center on a $10,000 secured bond.

On Feb. 24, Garcia was extradited to Otero County on the outstanding warrant.

Today, sheriff’s detectives obtained a warrant for Garcia on charges of aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer, a fourth-degree felony.
