stones and removing tumors — without surgery. university medical center has new equipment — and a unique partnership — that is helping dozens in the region. we’re taking a look at the “spyglass” – new this morning and only on abc- seven: this isn’t outer space — this is inside the human body! a camera captures a biopsy inside a bile duct. the camera fits in a scope thinner than a pen. 2.00 it’s a vehicle that we can use to access parts of the body that we could never get to before. 2.07 this is the spyglass. it’s the only one of its kind in el paso. and it’s at u-m-c. 3:56 this is new frontier for us to see with our own eyes, with video, what the inner lining of these ducts look like 4.07 what’s really neat about the spyglass – it can also house a laser. so, if the patient needs gall stones removed — the laser can blast them apart. 54 we can pick up early cancers of the bd or pancreas — almost uniformly fatal diseases dr. sandeep patel performs the procedures. he flies in from u-t san antonio twice a month — as part of a new regional collaboration. 5.10 we’ve now brought that to el paso with collaboration with umc and texas tech. to feel that we’re making an impact to the people of this community it’s really gratifying process for us. 6.14 and a potentially life- saving process for the dozens of day of the procedure. a
