Community Champion: Janelle Perez

FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State senior Janelle Perez, a graduate of Horizon High School, was honored as the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the year on Wednesday.

Perez was a member of the 2011-12 Horizon team that went all the way to the Elite Eight in the state playoffs before falling to Mansfield Summit out of Arlington.

Perez, who is on pace to graduate in May, scored in double figures in every conference game this year and led her team in assists all four seasons at the school.

The health and exercise science student also currently has a 3.7 grade point average.

This is the third straight year she has received an academic award from the conference.
