Truck crashes into the bedroom of a northeast El Paso home
An 11 year old girl and her mother say their lucky to be alive Saturday morning after a truck crashed right into their bedroom.
The crashed happened at around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Sun Valley Drive and Menzies Street in northeast El Paso.
The family that lives in the home tells ABC-7 the city needs to do something about the intersection. They say it is a dangerous stretch of road, where for the past 36 years, they’ve had cars crashing into their property. “Sooner or later it’s going to take somebody dying for them to finally do something. If she (the driver) would have been going five to ten miles faster she would of killed the home owner,” said Dawn Spencer. Spencer is a friend of the family and has also lived in the home. “This turn is very dangerous,” Spencer said. “They call this dead man’s curve,” said Moses Grau. Grau who lives a street away heard the crash. “It sounded like an explosion,” Grau said. The aftermath shows the furniture is unrecognizable. “There was a dresser next to the wall that was completely shattered,” Spencer said. Spencer shows ABC-7 where her friend and homeowner Kelly Perkins was lying when the truck plowed into her bedroom. “This stuff happens when it’s icy, when it’s rainy, middle of the day, middle of the night, most of the time it is because they are going to fast,” Spencer told ABC-7. The street is equipped with wooden posts and guards but they haven’t kept cars from barreling into properties. Residents say they’ve been begging the city for stop signs or speed bumps. “They basically have told us that they cannot install speed bumps because it is a four lane road,” Spencer said. The impact was so hard it impaled furniture into the wall. “All I felt was the vibrations and all the books fell on me,” said Kate Apodaca. Apodaca was in the next room when the truck crashed into the room. Spencer says they’ve begun documenting the damage. In 2012, a truck hit their fence. In 2014, a car took a tree down on their property. In 2015, a woman crashed into the home. One crash sent one of the wooden poles into the air, damaging the air conditioner. At one point while crews worked on previous crash damage, a car plowed into their cars. Little Kate has a message for city officials.
“Please come help us. You need to do something about this next time we could be severely injured,” Kate told ABC-7.
ABC-7 crews at the scene saw a woman being taken into custody by police. Police have not yet said what caused the driver to lose control.
