UTEP Football ticket sales plunge since season opener

The University of Texas at El Paso is trying to drum up fan support as the Miners prepare to take on Old Dominion during Saturday’s Homecoming game.

The 52,000 seat Sun Bowl Stadium looked bare and empty when only 18,000 fans attended the last home game.

“This is rock bottom,” Sports Talk 600 ESPN host Steve Kaplowitz said, “UTEP sports is frustrating. No one wants to be in an empty stadium. Players don’t want to be in an empty stadium, fans don’t want to be in an empty stadium.”

At the beginning of the season, UTEP had more than 30,000 fans rumbling in the Sun Bowl for the home opener. The following weekend, UTEP took on Army and had nearly 38,000 fans in attendance.

Attendance has slowly dropped as the season continues. When Florida International came to the Borderland, only about 18,000 fans showed up.

Athletic Director Bob Stull tells ABC-7 the team’s record and weather play a big role in whether fans will attend.

Stull said UTEP still has one of the best turnout rates in Conference USA. “I think we are second or third in attendance in the league. Everyone will tell you UTEP fans are the toughest to play against in football,” Stull said.
