El Paso to reintroduce Downtown parking meter fees on Saturdays

The City’s International Bridges Department announced today that the grace period for not feeding parking meters on Saturdays will expire on November 19, 2016. To inform motorists of the change, warning notices will be issued starting Nov. 5.

The City had offered free parking on Saturdays at parking meters within the shopping districts of downtown in an effort to increase retail and cultural activities in the heart of the city.

In September, Council adopted a resolution to resume charging for parking in the downtown shopping district on Saturdays to help fund the Sun City Lights projects citywide. The project, which includes improvements to the Paseo de las Luces on South El Paso Street in downtown, is an initiative that combines public art, urban design and neighborhood revitalization in key city corridors to enhance economic opportunities.

Currently, parking meters in Downtown operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and will operate at the same hours Monday through Saturday after November 19. Meter fees cost 50 cents for every 30 minutes and will operate at the same fares.

Free parking will continue at all meters on Sundays, city-recognized holidays (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day) and for special events approved by City Council.
