What does it really take to stick to New Year’s resolutions?

2017 is here and for many that means starting on their resolutions. So what should you keep in mind if you want to commit for the whole year?

“Look at something in a smaller piece and look at something from that standpoint, the chances are going to be greater that you’re successful,” said Ricardo Samaniego, an executive coach who helps large companies and their employees meet their goals.

Samaniego said accepting and planning for hiccups in your resolution is a big part of success.

“On Wednesday of this week things might go wrong, but that’s not the end of my journey, my journey is the 365 days,” he said.

So so we went out to get you some tips on popular resolutions.

Joining a gym? Going in and doing the minimum is better than not going at all.

“If you look at it, you wouldn’t have come in, you wouldn’t have burned those calories, you wouldn’t have stressed the muscle. But if you did come in, even if it’s a light workout, you still got something in, it’s a big win,” said John Becerra, a personal trainer.

Want to eat healthier?. Buying ingredients for a single recipe can get expensive in the long run.

“Get a few recipes together and find those common ingredients and then just buy those. That way you can have a set of ingredients that you can mix and match and create a lot of different dishes,” Raul Gonzalez, a professional chef said.

While sharing your goals for the year may sometimes keep you accountable to your friends and family, it can also backfire.

“I would rather work on my goal, feel a little stronger with it, be successful with it, be comfortable with it, make sure that I’m happy with what I’m so I get to a certain point when someone’s perception doesn’t influence my goal,” Samaniego explained.

If you don’t know exactly how to start on whatever your resolution is, you can always hit up a library, bookstore, or YouTube to see how others have done it.
