What to expect from Burges and Andress in high school playoffs
It is no surprise both the Andress Eagles and the Burges Mustangs have found themselves in the high school basketball playoffs yet again.
The Burges Mustangs marched their way to a 24-7 record in large part due to their excellent trio of players in Brothers Jawaun Newton and Tristen Newton alongside Deion Bauman. Now the Mustangs are competing in the Region 1-5A tournament Friday in Synder against Fort Worth Eastern Hills.
Brothers Jawaun and Tristen are averaging around 26 and 22 points per game respectively, while also leading the team in rebounds. Bauman also plays a large part adding 18 points per game, making the Mustangs offensive attack a well-rounded machine.
Burges reached the regional tournament before falling to Fort Worth Dunbar in the semifinals, and the Mustangs are hopeful they can make an even stronger push in 2017.
As for the Andress Eagles, they also lost in the regional semifinals but have a legitimate chance at making a serious run in the postseason. Thanks to their senior leadership in guards Eric Simmons and Shahodd Singleton, the Eagles have had continued success in reaching the regional tournament two straight seasons.
Head Coach Jim Forbes has been here before and will help lead the charge Friday, as the Eagles will face Justin Northwest, a school located near Forth Worth, at approximately 5 p.m. MST.
