Two UTEP Miners named to C-USA Preseason Team

On Monday, UTEP seniors Will Hernandez (guard) and Alvin Jones (linebacker) were named to the 2017 Preseason Conference USA Football Team.

For Hernandez, this is his seventh preseason honor so far (Outland Trophy, Athlon Sports All-American, Athlon Sports All-C-USA, Dave Campbell’s All-Texas Team, Phil Steele’s All-American and Phil Steele’s All-C-USA teams).

Hernandez has started all 37 games at the left guard position during his career and been a key part of an offensive line unit that has surrendered only 47 sacks in those 37 contests.

This is linebacker Alvin Jones’ fourth preseason award (Athlon Sports’ All-C-USA Team, Dave Campbell’s All-Texas Team, Phil Steele’s All-C-USA Team).

The linebacker played in 10 contests in 2016, making eight starts and missing two games due to injury.

Despite missing some time, he earned All-C-USA Second Team honors after leading the Miners in tackles with 93 (44 solo).

Jones also led the team with 72 tackles on rushing plays and registered double-digit tackles in four contests.

The El Paso native and brother of former running back Aaron Jones has 241 career tackles and 10.5 career sacks, needing only 1.5 sacks to crack the all-time top 10 list at UTEP.
