Pedestrian struck and killed on Zaragoza identified, driver charged

Police identified the pedestrian killed as he crossed Zaragoza in Far East El Paso as 62-year-old Martin Mendoza.

The wreck happened shortly after 1 am July 29, 2017 on the 1600 block of Zaragoza.

The driver who struck Mendoza, 32-year-old Brian Pete Rojas, was charged with Accident Involving Death.

Police said Rojas drove away without offering help, but later walked into the Pebble Hills Regional Command Center to report the crash.

Police said Mendoza did not use the crosswalk as he attempted to cross Zaragoza. Rojas has since posted bond, court records show.

The investigation revealed Rojas was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima south on Zaragosa when he struck Mendoza.
