Women’s Hoops: UTEP suffers first loss at the hands of UNM

The UTEP women’s basketball team was only able to connect on 11 shots from the floor Thursday night in a 59-35 home loss against the New Mexico Lobos.

UNM improved to 8-0 on the year with the win while the Miners dropped their first game of the season and now sit at 4-1.

UTEP was a mere 11-44 from the field and committed 25 turnovers against a stifling UNM defense.

“They really guarded us well,” UTEP head coach Kevin Baker said. “They do a really good job. I don’t think anybody the rest of the year is going to hold them to 59 points. We did everything we wanted to do defensively to them. I’m proud of our kids. The better team won tonight.”

The Miners did manage to hold the Lobos about 30 points below their season average. However, UNM did hit 12 three-pointers to cruise to victory.

Though UNM made it difficult for the Miners to get the ball to star forward Tamara Seda, the UTEP senior still recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Seda’s effort also helped UTEP grab 13 more rebounds than UNM (44-31), but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s poor shooting night.

UTEP will next play Houston Baptist Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center.
