Former Texas QB/WR Kai Locksley drawing interest from UTEP, NMSU

UTEP and NMSU are among the teams interested in former Texas quarterback/wide receiver Kai Locksley, according to reports.

Locksley has gotten plenty of attention this month after posting nearly 3,000 total yards of offense and 40 total touchdowns (20 passing, 20 rushing) as the starting quarterback for Iowa Western Community College this past season.

Coming out of high school, Locksley was one of the top-rated players in the state of Maryland. He landed at Texas as a quarterback, but the Longhorns thought he would be a better fit at wide receiver.

After redshirting his freshman year at Texas, the 6’4″ Locksley found himself buried on the wide receiver depth chart, so he left the Longhorns. Eventually, he ended up at Iowa Western, putting up huge numbers in 2017.

According to the Des Moines Register, Locksley received an offer from UTEP after a recent visit from new offensive coordinator Mike Canales.

New Mexico State is also in the race for Locksley. The Aggies had reportedly previously made an offer on Dec. 5.

However, Pittsburgh also appears to be highly interested. Locksley tweeted out Thursday that he would be visiting Pitt this weekend.

The offensive coordinator for Pitt just so happens to be Shawn Watson, the man who was Locksley’s quarterbacks coach at Texas before the Longhorns moved him to wide receiver.
