Bel Air celebrates historic boys soccer state title

The Bel Air boys soccer team is still riding high after Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Frisco Wakeland in the 5A state title game, which gave the Highlanders their first soccer state championship.

The Highlanders hosted a media day Monday afternoon to discuss their historic title and relive some of the best moments from their dramatic victory over a Wakeland team that had won back-to-back state crowns.

“Well, it’s an emotion I can’t even describe because we are the only ones who know how much work we put in,” said Omar Zamora, who scored one of the team’s two goals in the final. “And I’m very happy. I can’t even describe the feeling.”

Future Bel Air teams may very well win a state title of their own, but this team knows they will forever be remembered as the first team to break through.

“I mean, everyone has been telling us that we’ve made history. And I think we’re very proud of that. It’s a really special feeling that our names are registered with the first team that ever won,” said goalkeeper Kevin Peña.

Ivar Arroyo, who scored the other goal for the Highlaners in the final, told us that this weekend will certainly go down as one of the best of his entire life.

“Well, it’s such an honor to be the first generation to win state for Bel Air. And through all my life, I’m going to remember this weekend,” he said.

But the team is not done celebrating just yet.

Big Red Nation is invited to join the team for an official celebration at Highlander Stadium on Monday, April 29 at 6 p.m. All community members are welcome to attend the event.

The San Elizario boys soccer team also won their second state title in a row at the 4A level.

We reached out to school officials who told us the team is planning to host their own celebration on Thursday, May 2. However, details have not been finalized just yet.
