Coronado guard Ayaan Sohail signs with Lamar basketball

Coronado guard Ayaan Sohail is on his way to play college basketball at the Division I level with Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas after signing his letter of intent Friday in a special ceremony.

Sohail is a talented point guard who can score in bunches as evidenced by his 35-point performance in a bidistrict win over Midland this past season.

He’s taking that ability to Lamar, a team that was already very solid a season ago and finished with a 20-13 overall mark and 12-6 record in the Southland Conference.

He’s confident he can impress the coaching staff enough to compete for playing time early in his career.

“The fact that it’s very close to home and the coaching staff believed in me played a big role in it. And the fact that their point guard just left, and I’d be coming in as a freshman go-getter, that also played a big role in it,” said Sohail.

Sohail says his family will make the trip across Texas to watch him play every time his team is at home. And when they’re on the road, his family will be watching, too.

“They will be at all of my home games. And a lot of our games will be on ESPN, so they’ll be able to watch us on TV,” he said.

UTEP fans might recall that Lamar was the school that defeated UTEP in November of 2017 at the Haskins Center in Tim Floyd’s final game.
