SWAT mobilizes in El Paso neighborhood where murder occurred; victim identified

Police mobilized SWAT officers Tuesday in a far East El Paso neighborhood where a murder occurred a day earlier.

A SWAT team surrounded a home in the 11600 block of Henry Phipps during the morning hours and a police spokesman said it was related to the investigation into the homicide.

Meanwhile Tuesday, police identified the murder victim as 35-year-old Miguel Alvarado. Authorities said his mother found him dead inside a home in the nearby 11800 block of Scott Simpson Drive on Monday. Police described the residence as a “major crime scene.”

The related SWAT standoff ended at midday Tuesday without anyone being taken into custody. And while no arrests had yet been made in Alvarado’s killing, police said residents living in the neighborhood where the murder happened shouldn’t be overly fearful.

“There is no reason to believe that there is a suspect at large that is out randomly targeting individuals,” said Sgt. Enrique Carrillo. “We don’t want to alarm the community in regards to that.”
