Socorro High School becomes 1st in El Paso area to install metal detectors

MGN

EL PASO, Texas -- Socorro High School is believed to be the first school in the El Paso area to install metal detectors.

The Socorro Independent School District has installed nine metal detectors at a total of seven of the school's busiest entry points.

In addition, school security personnel are also geared with hand-held metal detectors.

Maribel Macias, a spokeswoman for the district, cited "certain incidents that occurred in the Socorro community and it was a perfect opportunity for us to increase the support that we had there."

Last week, 15-year-old Jesus Estrada was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Another teenager was arrested in connection with his death.
