Transformer explosion causes brief power outage for 1,600 in east El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- A transformer explosion was believed responsible for a power outage impacting about 1,600 homes and businesses in east El Paso late Tuesday night for about an hour.

The blown transformer occurred around 10 p.m at Pellicano Road and Zaragoza Drive, according to police and fire dispatch.

The outage was concentrated in the area near the failed transformer. All customers had their power restored by 11 p.m., according to El Paso Electric.

There was no immediate word on what caused the transformer to explode.
