Clint Independent School district to honor Horizon High School Student that died in Walmart shooting

EL PASO, Texas - The youngest victim of the 2019 Walmart massacre will be honored by the Clint ISD on Friday.

Javier Amir Rodriguez would have been a graduating senior at Horizon High School this year. He is remembered as an avid soccer player and was the captain of Horizon’s soccer team.

Clint ISD Superintendent Juan Martinez said that he can’t visit Horizon’s soccer field, which had been freshly replaced at the time without thinking of Rodriguez.

Speaking of the new playing surface back in August of 2020, Martinez said "There is not a moment that, if I come here -- this week I've been here at least three times -- and every time it is the first thing that comes to my memory. It's him. It is him."

Rodriguez tragically lost his life in the August 2019 Walmart shooting that took the lives of 22 additional people and injured 23 more. He was only 15 years old and had just started 10th grade.
The Clint ISD previously hosted a vigil for Rodriguez on Horizon’s soccer field just two days after his death.

Rodriguez’s life will be honored once again this Friday, June 3 during Horizon High School’s graduation. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Don Haskins Center in El Paso.
