Hot Jobs: Being an Ice Cream vendor in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas - I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Ice cream is an absolute favorite of many, especially for those of us who live in hot desert climates like here in the Borderland.

As the temperatures are forecasted to hit 100 degrees all week long, ABC-7 wanted to know, are ice cream sales skyrocketing? How do ice cream men keep their products cold, and how fast will ice cream melt outside? We found the answers to all of these questions by speaking with the President and Owner of Big Boy Concessions, Daniel Morales.

Big Boy Concessions was created by Daniel's father- Christino Morales in 1955. Since then, it's become a family concession selling empire, with most relatives running their own concession chains. Daniel sells snacks, treats, and more to El Paso, Ciudad Juarez, Amarillo, Odessa, Midland, Abilene and more!

When visiting Big Boy Concessions, Daniel invited ABC-7 behind the scenes into a large walk-in freezer filled with boxes and boxes of ice cream.

Daniel shared, "we have walk-in freezers that we have our ice cream in, and actually it's all about freezers." His freezers are of the utmost importance to keep his product cold enough to sell. He also shared that he has a very handy technician who has his back if a machine breaks down.

When customers buy and transport cold products, "the most effective is the dry ice to keep it frozen. We sell dry ice, so as soon as they put the ice cream in the ice chest, they put the dry ice on top," said Daniel.

When asked about the ice cream selling business "we've been seeing the increase since probably May, since it started getting warmer and warmer. And as it gets warmer, the increase of ice cream [purchases] actually goes up," Daniel informed.

But through the pandemic and the repercussions of the pandemic, supply chain and employment issues have impacted his business. "Not only have we seen an increase [in prices], but we have had shortages of product. The increase has been straight out- in everything- I've seen it everywhere," he said.

When Daniel can, he does try to "give them deals. Like we put stuff on special, and ice cream on special. And even sometimes we put buy one get another one free."

Finally, Daniel said he is looking for more workers during the summer months. If you may be interested in working for Big Boy Concessions, you should click here, and find the employment opportunities tab.
