Hawaii’s new sunscreen law

CNN --

If you're planning to visit Hawaii you will need to bring reef-safe sunscreen to go into the waters of Maui's most famous beaches. The same will apply to other area beaches.

When people swim in the ocean, the chemicals from some kinds of sunscreen can wash into the ocean harming marine life and coral. Now, only mineral based sunscreens, made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide will be allowed.

Maui tourism officials are working hard to educate visitors on the new change. If you're worried you didn't bring the right sunscreen, there will be dispensers placed at 20 popular beach locations in Maui.

Researchers will continue to test to make sure the new sunscreen law is helping keep those chemicals out of the water. The change will start on December 1st.
