Commissioner of the National Institute of Migration attends hearing; faces several charges

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- The commissioner of the National Institute of Migration, Francisco Garduño had a scheduled hearing for the tragedy that left 40 migrants dead in Juarez. It happened at the Mexican federal courthouse building in Juarez.

Although Garduño was expected to face Mexico's attorney general's office, the hearing was rescheduled to happen next Tuesday, April 25. The delay was due to the extensive files they needed to go through.

He spoke with local and national media after the hearing was rescheduled and said that since the hearing changed, he couldn't mention details of the process he is facing.

Commissioner Garduño did mention that since he arrived in Juarez after the tragedy, his only goal and concern was to assist the migrant victims and visit them in the hospitals.

Mexican authorities didn't arrest him.

Mexico's attorney general's office announced the investigation against Garduño and other federal officials on April 11.

Before next week's hearing, Garduño will meet with Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos to discuss the recent migratory influx Juarez has seen.
