Mosh pit fight leads to shooting in South-Central El Paso, victim in critical condition

UPDATE (May 14, 2026) -- A mosh pit fight escalated into the shooting outside a music venue, according to police documents ABC-7 obtained. Documents said it happened at EP Underground near DeadBeach Brewery.

Javier Arroyo Gerardo's brother, Adrian, alleged the victim assaulted him inside the venue. According to documents, the victim's friend and witness told police there was a "moshing-type physical contact" that escalated into a fight broken up by security.

Moshing is a dance style often done at alternative concerts where people "violently and energetically push, slam and jump into one another," documents said.

Arroyo Gerardo arrived at the venue with their other brother and looked for people involved in the fight, documents said. A witness said another fight started and heard five to seven "pops."

According to an affidavit, police believe Arroyo Gerardo "pushed the fight" outside the venue. The investigation confirmed he came armed from Las Cruces to confront the people about the fight with his brother and shot the victim.

Documents said Arroyo Gerardo admitted to police he shot the victim in self-defense and alleged the victim had a gun. Documents later said witnesses said the victim didn't have a gun.

UPDATE (6:34 p.m.) -- El Paso police arrested a 29-year-old man from Las Cruces in connection with the shooting. Police charged Javier Arroyo Gerardo for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to police, officers found a 21-year-old man also from Las Cruces who was shot several times. He was sent to a hospital. Police said he was last known to be in critical condition.

Investigators said a private event happened near 300 N. San Marcial Street close to Austin High School. Police said during the event, the victim and Gerardo started arguing. Gerardo shot the victim before leaving the event.
