Opening statements underway in New Mexico vs. Facebook lawsuit

Meta, Facebook, MGN

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The New Mexico Department of Justice is said to begin presenting key witnesses, including experts, and video depositions from Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg.

Associate professor Calum Matheson is expected to say Facebook's messaging was engineered to mislead the public.

Zuckerberg and Sandberg will address what Facebook knew about the data scandal and how they handled user information.

In 2008, Facebook hired Sheryl Sandberg to help turn user data into revenue.

In 2013, a personality test app on Facebook collected data from millions of users worldwide, most without consent. That data was sold to Cambridge Analytica for targeted political ads in 2016.

The New Mexico Department of Justice says that Facebook did not inform users until a whistleblower exposed the breach in 2018.
