16-year-old boy arrested for gunning down Las Cruces man

UPDATE, Sept. 10: Las Cruces police announced charges Friday against a 16-year-old boy in last weekend's death of a 31-year-old man.

The teen, who police declined to identify because of his age, is charged with an open count of murder and one count of tampering with evidence.

The boy is accused of fatally shooting Matthew Portillo in the 1000 block of Juniper Avenue. His arrest came after police received a tip about a car seen leaving the shooting scene.

Investigators didn't provide a motive in the killing or provide further information about their investigation.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Sept. 8: LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Las Cruces police have offered a $2,000 reward for help finding the person or persons responsible for a suspicious death over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Police were seeking to develop additional clues in the death of 31-year-old Matthew Portillo, whose body was discovered on Juniper Avenue around 7 a.m. on Sunday.

While the cause of his death wasn't immediately known, authorities said Tuesday they had determined Portillo was the victim of foul play - although they didn't elaborate.

Investigators said Portillo was last seen at the Rad Retrocade Bar on Main Street early Sunday before his body was discovered hours later lying along a blood-stained sidewalk.

Police asked that anyone with information about his death call Las Cruces Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
