A struggle for a gun led to a woman shooting her boyfriend, El Paso police say

Update (July 21, 2024): Jail records show Navejas remains in jail on a $150,000 bond.

Navejas was indicted May 29, 2024. She was arraigned July 15, 2024. There is a settlement conference scheduled in the case for September 23, 2024 at 9:00 AM.


Update: Court documents state that Navejas called 911 to report that she had been assaulted and that she had shot Olivas. The documents go on to explain that officers found Navejas inside of the apartment and detained her. They also found an unresponsive Olivas and a spent casing in the hallway outside the bedroom. Medical emergency crews told officers Olivas was already dead.

Navejas spoke with Crimes Against Persons detectives, according to court documents. She reportedly told them she had been dating Olivas for six months. Court documents state that Navejas told detectives that she is a "Level 3 security guard" and carries a gun on duty.

Court documents state that Navejas told detectives she had started to feel sick at work that day and left early. She reportedly told detectives she and Olivas got into an argument about "her not wanting to work," according to court documents.

When she got to her apartment she allegedly took off her gun and put it in a closet. She told detectives she and Olivas continued the argument in the apartment. Court documents state Navejas alleged Olivas had been drinking. She reported to detectives that Olivas slapped her face lightly and started to pull her hair before walking to the closet.

Court documents state that Navejas gave conflicting stories as to what happened next. She alleged that she tried to get the gun away from Olivas and ended up shooting him. Court documents state Navejas took 30 minutes to call 911 and had moved the casings before police arrived.


Update: El Paso Police say they have arrested and charged 41-year-old Valerie Ann Navejas with murder. She was booked into jail on a $150,000 bond.

Police identify the victim as 49-year-old Todd Olivas. Police say that officers were first called out on reports of a domestic dispute. Crimes Against Persons and Crime Scene Unit personnel were called out to investigate.

Police say this is the seventh murder in El Paso this year, compared to seven this time last year.


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - El Paso Police have been at the 6800 block of Bellrose in East El Paso since 9:45 p.m. Friday.

Officer were sent out on a domestic dispute call where shots were fired at an apartment complex.

Police say they found one person with gunshot wounds who died from their injuries.

Another person was taken into custody.

Police have not identified those involved.

This is a developing story and police continue to investigate.
