Man lying down on US-54 hit, killed

Update (4:38 PM): El Paso Police say Special Traffic Investigators believe a car traveling south on US-54 swerved to avoid a person lying down in the road. The car was unable to avoid the man, who has not yet been identified. The driver then called police to report the incident.

Police say this is the 27th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 29 this time last year.


Update (9:54 AM): El Paso Police just confirmed that their Special Traffic Unit is investigating a fatality. Officials say an unidentified man died.


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso Police have closed off US-54 in the Northeast after a person was hit by a car early Tuesday morning.

It happened in the Southbound lanes on US-54 near the Ellerthorpe Ave exit.

Our ABC-7 crew on the scene did see what looks like a white sheet covering a body at the scene.

The Special Traffic Investigations Unit and medical examiner also responded to the scene.

STI covered the white sheet with a black tarp.

Officials have not confirmed any injuries or deaths at this time.

Right now there is no other information available.

This is a developing story.
