Poland calls on the EU to extend the embargo on Ukraine grain to prevent glut and protect farmers

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s government has called on the European Union to extend the embargo on imports of Ukrainian grain beyond Friday deadline to protect Polish farmers. EU members Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia have imposed an embargo on four Ukrainian grains from April until Sept. 15 to prevent a glut in their home markets. After a meeting Tuesday, Poland’s government said it wants Brussels to extend the protective measure, but has decided to it it anyway. Poland is in the midst of intensive campaigning for parliamentary elections next month and the government trying to reach farmer voters. The European Parliament also is to debate the embargo, with the EU agriculture commissioner saying he is making efforts to have it extended.
